Pruritus and edema are symptoms that go with a range of conditions, but they are signs of the hepatitis C virus. Pruritus refers to extreme itching while edema is extreme swelling. The virus inhibits the liver’s ability to process bilirubin. Bilirubin is a sugar excreted by bile and urine. An excess of toxins is thus allowed to form. The itchiness which ensues is not itself harmful, but the open wound from scratching is. Hepatitis C sufferers at times receive prescriptions for anti-depressants, anti-histamines and analgesics due to incessant scratching. These medications  help patients  cope with the horrible itching.
