Named after the Greek god of fertility, Priapus, priapism is an unusual, very painful condition that results in an ongoing erection that isn’t caused by arousal or any form of sexual stimulation. It is a condition that requires urgent attention if it persists because it can lead to tissue damage and, ironically, an inability to get or maintain an erection – which is a much more common health issue, erectile dysfunction. According to the Mayo Clinic, priapism is most common in boys aged between five and ten years, and men aged 20 to 50.
