Stone Spheres – Costa Rica

These large stone spheres date back to the year 600 AD. They can be found throughout the Diquis Delta region of Costa Rica. They are known as Las Bolas, or “The Balls,” to locals and were created in the pre-Columbian era using molten magma and smaller stones to carve it into a perfect sphere. Some believe that the rocks were used as markers that lead to significant places while others believe it had to do with astronomy. Either way, we aren’t exactly sure what they were used for. During the Spanish conquest, the Chibchan people vanished and took the meaning of the stones with them.
