The sport of gymnastics hasn’t always been what it is today. Originally developed by the ancient Greeks, they used specific exercises to improve their horse-mounting skills. It spread to Athens and Sparta and was used to prepare men for warfare. Modern gymnastics wasn’t developed until late in the eighteenth century. Considered trailblazers of physical education, two Germans, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn and Johann Friedrich GutsMaths built their own equipment and created corresponding exercises.
